Northwest Ohio Green Products Center Launched
Toledo, Ohio – The Northwest Ohio Green Products Center is a community-based initiative whose goal is to establish Toledo and northwest Ohio as a center for the development, production and use of products made from earth-friendly, renewable, “biobased” materials. The Center is a direct result of several collaborating organizations recognizing the importance of biobased products in the marketplace and establishing a system to assist local manufacturers in this area. The Center for Innovative Food Technology, Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Bowling Green State University, Lucas County Community Improvement Corporation, The Regional Growth Partnership, Small Business and Entrepreneurship Institute at the University of Toledo and the Toledo Procurement Technical Assistance Center at the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce will provide direction and technical assistance in the creation of products and identification of procurement potential within the federal government. Equally, in an effort to encourage new business development, resources will be provided to assist entrepreneurs in business planning for the advancement of concepts.

The USDA BioPreferredSM program requires governmental agencies to give purchasing preference to biobased products. "The BioPreferredSM program, as Spartan Chemical in Maumee has shown, is ideally suited to our community and our region,” stated Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur. “BioPreferredSM gives us another tool to create jobs and economic opportunity while making our country more innovative, more productive and more energy independent," she added.

The purpose of the Northwest Ohio Green Products Center is to support economic development in the region by linking companies and entrepreneurs to the resources capable of expanding their options within the marketplace, particularly but not limited to, governmental procurement. Biobased products are composed, in whole or significant part, from renewable plant or animal materials rather than synthetic chemicals or hydrocarbons and petroleum-based ingredients. Biobased products range from adhesives and construction materials to paints and fuel additives.

The manufacturing and purchasing of green products makes good business sense, poses economic value to the local economy, supports a cleaner environment for future generations, and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers of materials.
