The certification of bioplastics

compostableTo facilitate the procedure of certifying products made of compostable materials, DIN CERTCO maintains registers of constituent materials, intermediates and additives that are either biodegradable as specified in DIN V 54900, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868), or otherwise meet the requirements of the certification scheme. Processing companies are thus able to refer to these registers when applying for certification of their products. In this way, applications for certification can be made in a simpler and more economical form. When the result is positive, the material (intermediate or additive) is entered in one of two positive lists, either in the "Register of materials and intermediates approved for the manufacture of certified products made of compostable materials" or in the "Register of additives approved for the manufacture of certified products made of compostable materials". Should the result be negative, a certificate of non-objection may be issued if it has been proven that the material, although biodegradable, does not fully meet the stringent requirements of DIN V 54900, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868).

The following documents are to be submitted together with the application:

For the registration of a material:

  • Details of the chemical composition
  • Test report complying with DIN V 54900, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400
  • Infrared transmission spectrum

For the registration of an intermediate:

  • Description of the structure of the intermediate, indicating all layer thicknesses
  • List of all materials used, indicating their respective percentage by mass in the intermediate
  • For each material present in the intermediate: Reference to the listing of the material in the corresponding positive list or a test report complying with DIN V 54900, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868) and
  • For the intermediate: Test report for a disintegration test complying with DIN V 54900-3, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868).
  • Alternatively a test report according to DIN V 54900-3, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868) for the intermediate
  • For each material in the intermediate: One infrared transmission spectrum (This requirement does not apply to materials that are registered in the positive list maintained by DIN CERTCO.).

For the registration of an additive:

  • Details of chemical composition
  • Test report documenting chemical safety and biological degradability as specified in DIN V 54900-1 and -2 or DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868) or in accordance with other internationally recognised standard methods of testing biological degradability.
  • Infrared transmission spectrum

Certification of products:

Certification is undertaken for products only, not for materials, additives or intermediates. Application may be made for certification of separate products, product families or individual subtypes of a product. When the result of testing is positive, a certificate with a registration number will be issued for the product concerned. On conclusion of an agreement on the use of the logo with DIN CERTCO (and, for products whose disposal is subject to the provisions of the German Packaging Regulation, on submission of evidence of the conclusion of a waste-disposal contract for the product concerned), the certified and marked product may be placed on the market. The following documents are to be submitted together with the application.

For the certification of a product:

  • Design drawing, detailed description of the product (product family) and of its application. In the case of a product family: for each type, details of all parameters in which the separate types differ.
  • List of all materials (intermediates) and additives used in the manufacture of the product, indicating their respective percentage by mass in the product and their respective wall thickness and/or layer thickness.
  • Proof of compliance with DIN V 54900, DIN EN 13432 or ASTM D 6400 (ASTM D 6868) for all materials (intermediates) used that are not registered in the positive list of materials and intermediates (DIN CERTCO). For this purpose, the complete test reports are to be submitted.
  • Proof of compliance with the requirements specified in the certification scheme for all additives used that are present in the product in a percentage by mass greater than 1% and that are not registered in the positive list of additives (DIN CERTCO). Here, too, the complete test reports are to be submitted.
  • Infrared transmission spectrum of all materials used and of all additives present in the product in a percentage by mass greater than 1%.
  • List of all other substances used in the product and of all materials which in the course of intended use may be disposed as waste together with the product. Proof of non-toxicity for these materials and substances.
