What is new in the latest edition?

The report has been completely updated and substantially extended. Additional information on more than 20 new bioplastics has been included. The report now contains detailed information on 73 biodegradable polymers and bioplastics.

For the first time, a comparative analysis also investigates differences and consistencies between bioplastics and conventional plastics in key parameters such as impact strength and E-module. The report thus provides a comprehensive basis for plastic manufacturers and processors who are considering entering the bioplastics market.

What does the report offer?

The key part of the study is a comprehensive, comparative compilation of the technical characteristics and the processing properties of biodegradable plastics. The study also takes into consideration non-biodegradable plastics, as long as they are manufactured from renewable raw materials. A large selection of these plastics has been made into test units by a casting machine at the Institute for Recycling (IfR). To ensure comparability of the casting characteristics, no adjustments to the machine, such as using different spiral geometries, have been made during processing. The material tests have all been performed on a variety of testing machines at the in-house laboratory of the Institute. The technical parameters have been determined according to up-to-date DIN-standards, and the testing conditions were kept as identical as possible for each unit. The tests comprise:

  • Determination of density
  • Absorption of humidity under standard climatic conditions
  • Grade according to Shore D
  • Determination of shrinkage
  • Determination of the Vicat-Softening Temperature
  • Determination of ash contents
  • Determination of the area of melting temperatures
  • Recording of data from the pull test
  • Recording of data from the 3-point bending test
  • Hack-/impact-durability test according to Charpy

Standardized conditions have been observed by using identical testing machines and testing parameters, the most important prerequisite to ensure comparability of all data.

For the first time, a comparative analysis also investigates differences and consistencies between bioplastics and conventional plastics in key parameters such as impact strength and E-module. The report thus provides a comprehensive basis for plastic manufacturers and processors who are considering entering the bioplastics market.

Who is the intended readership of the report?

The study is mainly intended for manufacturers, processors and users of biodegradable plastics, as well as manufacturers who plan on starting thermoplastic biopolymers-processing, and everyone who is interested in getting an overview of the materials, their characteristics, prices, and ways of using them.

How comprehensive is the presentation?

The study represents worldwide available biodegradable plastics and bio-plastics. After intensive research of all available biodegradable plastics, their processing and testing, we now have the results for 73 polymers from almost 30 manufacturers and developers.

How is the information presented?

All data are concisely presented in form of a study. The materials are sorted according to material groups (cellulose ester, poly hydroxybutyates, poly condensates, poly lactic acids, starch blends/-derivatives, wood and other natural materials), and within the groups alphabetically according to manufacturer name. Information from company brochures and personal interviews has been incorporated in the study, in addition to the data that the IfR had determined. To achieve a clear separation between supplier information and the data determined by the Institute’s tests, the following structure for the presentation of the results has been adopted throughout the study:

  • Excerpts from supplier information such as address, material description, casting types, material characteristics, areas of usage/usage, ability to be composted
  • Recorded processing characteristics and casting characteristics as per IfR
  • Tested material characteristics as per IfR
  • Material information from manufacturers, with special emphasis on processing instructions and technical parameters

For the first time, a comparative analysis also investigates differences and consistencies between bioplastics and conventional plastics in key parameters such as impact strength and E-module. The report thus provides a comprehensive basis for plastic manufacturers and processors who are considering entering the bioplastics market.
