European centre for bio-based production kicks off |
Ghent – Belgian and Dutch ministers have given the starting signal for
Bio Base Europe, a joint initiative of Biopark Terneuzen and Ghent
Bio-Energy Valley aimed at creating the most important development
centre for bio-fuels, bio-dyes, bio-plastics, bio-chemicals and
bio-detergents in Europe.
Bio Base Europe will have two components:
a pilot plant worth EUR13m for bio-based products and processe. The
„Pilot Plant“ will start operations in early 2010. Additionally a EUR8m
“Training Centre” for process operators of bio-based activities will be
built.
Scientists will use the testing installation to determine how
agricultural by-products, such as wheat straw, corncobs, wood chips,
jatropha oil, and algal oil can be converted to bio-fuels, bio-plastics
and other bio-based products. Special attention will be given to the
scaling up of processes to an industrial scale.
