Blood-based plastic better for environment

Animal blood is replacing petroleum in plastic manufacturing as a cheaper and better alternative for the environment.

Blood collected from abattoirs is rich in the protein needed to make bio-plastic suitable for use on farms.

Senior engineer at New Zealand's Waikato University, Dr Johan Verbeek, says there are also other animal wastes that could be used to make biodegradable plastic.
