| Bioworks hopes to grow new jobs, opportunities |
|
Imagine a future in which farmers throughout the Mid-South ship crops to Memphis, where chemical companies convert them into everything from paint to plastic bottles. That's the vision that the Memphis Bioworks Foundation is promoting. The nonprofit, which focuses on building up science-based businesses and creating highly paid jobs, is planning a big push into industrializing agriculture. They're calling the initiative AgBio. "The long-term trend says that a bio-based economy is going to develop," said Bioworks leader Steve Bares. "That opportunity for job growth is something we want to be positioned for." The genesis of the effort is an government-backed project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in East Tennessee that's looking for efficient ways to make fuel from cellulose, a common fiber found in plants. Bares said he doesn't want Memphis to miss out on economic development opportunities that this and other projects may create. |
