Massachusetts is known as the birthplace of the plastics industry. Companies here made everything from flatware to flamingos before falling victim in the mid-1980s to the proliferation of cheap oil in the Middle East and cheap labor in east Asia. But a few companies are looking to give the industry a green light for growth. Rollable solar cells, corn-based gift cards and toothbrushes made from recycled yogurt cups are all products developed locally looking to be sold globally. Experts say plastics will play a major role in green initiatives, and the area stands to gain. |
